Sgt. Herland L. Pontius - World War II Veteran
In war, death is always near. Often the difference between life and death could be measured in inches or seconds or just in luck. Herland and his unit were ready to board a plane to Europe when Herland was abruptly reassigned. A Radar Technician Instructor was needed to train additional soldiers for this most important job. Herland was more valuable as an Instructor than as an Infantryman.
The plane his buddies boarded crashed somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, with all on board lost.
