Sgt. Herbert H. Hine - Korean War Veteran
Herb was originally a paratrooper in the Army... not very practical in mountainous Korea. So he became a combat medic, treating the wounded in the field and then conveying them to a M*A*S*H unit. He was wounded when he went to the aid of his captain, who had stepped on a land mine and lost his foot. As Herb treated him, another medic stepped on a second land mine next to them, sending shrapnel into all three. During the final stages of his recovery from his first wound, Herb drew “light duty,” working on Gen. Douglas McArthur’s staff on the 13th floor of the Federal Building in New York City.
