The coming of the railroad in 1868-1869 made Reading one of the best shipping points on the Lakeshore & Michigan Southern line.

During the late 1880s a number of excellent manufacturers and businesses prospered in Reading, indicated by the many fine homes—and the downtown brick buildings—built there during that era.
