Capt. Monty Powers - World War II Veteran

Monty celebrated his 21st birthday on a troop ship going to Italy.  Monty and his fellow G.I.’s were headed there during Christmas week of 1944.  By April of 1945, Mussolini was dead and the Italians had surrendered to the Allies.  Monty and his fellow fighter pilots spent six hour shifts alone in their cockpits, traveling at 32,000 feet where the temperature dropped as low as 52 degrees below zero.  With their help, the German army was pushed north and eventually defeated.
